Congratulations to the class of 2016 on fantastic GCSE results!

A year of great progress at Bedford High School – link to the Leigh Journal article.

Bedford High School Class of 2016 achieved excellent exam results. It was particularly pleasing to see many of our students achieving the highest possible standards. The number of A*-A grades increased by 50% on 2015. Almost one in five of grades (19%) achieved by students at Bedford was a ‘top’ grade. The figures below illustrate how these successes were achieved in many areas of the curriculum;

  • Physics 55% A*-A
  • English Literature 50% A*-A
  • Biology 52% A*-A
  • Music 39% A*-A
  • Geography 32% A*-A
  • English Language 23% A*-A

This academic excellence was reflected in the achievements of many individual students at Bedford. Special mention must go to Tom Draper who gained A* in all 11 of his subjects, a perfect set of results!

However, success is not just measured in A* and A grades. In 2016 the Average Points Score achieved across 8 subjects improved on 2015, with our students achieving an overall average grade of C, which represents a ‘good pass’. 54% of students achieved grade A*-C in both key subjects of English and Maths. This is close to the 2015 Bedford High school and national average figures, a real achievement considering that the prior attainment of this year group when they arrived at the school was significantly below national average. In 2016 the proportion of students making expected and more than expected progress in both English and Maths has improved. For example, 48% of students made MORE THAN expected progress in English, well above the figure achieved by most schools nationally.

We are also proud of the fact that 100% of students achieved passes. Every single student left with useful qualifications, even individuals who faced significant challenges or were unable to attend regularly due to difficulties.

The 2016 results are another indication of the growing success of Bedford High School. Levels of progress have improved in the majority of subjects including; English, Maths, English Literature, Spanish, Geography, Business, Media, Music, PE, Religious Studies, Food, Resistant Materials, Child Development and Leisure & Tourism. Progress is better than the national average in the following subjects; English, English Literature, Biology, Physics, Spanish, Geography, ICT, Media, Music, PE and Food.

This success is all due to the talent and hard work of our students and staff. Congratulations and good luck to all of our students as they embark on the next stage of their lives.

The key outcomes using the new measures are as follows:

% of students gaining A*-C in both English and Maths is 54%

Our Attainment 8 grade is C; this represents the average of the best 8 grades for every student

% of students securing A*-C in all 5 Ebacc subjects (English, Maths, Science, Languages, Humanities is 17%

Progress 8 is still being calculated nationally; we will add this in as soon as we can provide an accurate figure.
