David Whitehead, Chair of Governors, National Leader of Governance (NLG) It is my privilege to be the current Chair of Governors. I have been a governor since 2003, I was born and raised in Leigh but now live in Westhoughton. All my 3 sons have been students at Bedford High School. My father and mother in law, also attended the old Manchester road school. My brother was the first cohort of Bedford High in 1976. I am the managing director of an electrical contracting business operating from Atherton. In my social life I was a member of Leigh Round Table for over 20 years, and currently a member of the business support group for Wigan and Leigh Hospice. I have just recently been appointed a ‘National Leader of Governance’, which with training, allows me to help and assist other Governing bodies. My aim and priority as a school governor, is to ensure this school delivers the best education for all of our students, providing them with the best tools in either further education or the competitive world of work.
Kathryn Freeman, Co-opted Governor I am a procurement manager with a large defence organisation. My responsibilities include the project management of large equipment suppliers managing very large budgets. I was appointed to the board of governors in 2012 and sit on the Staffing and Curriculum Committees.
Paul Davies, Co-opted Governor I was a former student at the Boys Grammar School prior to the creation of Bedford High School. I have been a member of the governing body, initially as a parent governor, more recently as a co-opted governor for over 12 years. I am currently employed by the Local Authority as a school travel advisor after a career of over 25 years as a police officer.
Ian Halliwell, Parent Governor I am Vice Chair, a senior control, electrical and instrumentation desgin engineer and a member of the Institute of Engineering Technology, with 24 years experience in the design of plant control systems in the nuclear industry. I am a parent governor and have been a member of the governing body since 2009, following 4 years as a parent governor at St. Thomas C.E. Primary School. Among my hobbies is karate and I am a qualified instructor with the English Karate Academy.
Victoria Jackson, Co-opted Governor I am a member of the Institute for Chartered Accountants in England and Wales and have worked within the Financial Services industry as an Auditor for the last eight years for a big four firm. I have travelled internationally to Australia and New Zealand and I am currently on secondment to a Learning and Development function within my firm. My hobbies include yoga, cooking and travelling.
Stephen Lowe, Co-opted Governor I work as an orthopaedic podiatry practioner in the musculoskeletal clinical assessment and treatment service for Ashton, Leigh and Wigan Community Health Service. I have previously worked at Salford University as a lecturer practioner on the podiatry undergraduate course. My child attends Bedford High School. Other activities are scout leader, Leigh RLFC fan.
Channon Woodward, Parent Governor I am an IT project manager with over 15 years’ experience in the oil and gas industry; working for Europe’s largest energy company. I am responsible for defining strategies, investment and delivering mobile app solutions to support our business partners, customers and retailers in over 40 countries around the globe. I was appointed to the board of governors in 2016 and sit on the Assets and Standards committees. My hobbies include CrossFit, running and Karate and baking.
Neil Roberts, Staff Governor I have been the Teaching and Learning Leader for Science at Bedford High School for the last 9 years with previous experience in leading roles at 3 other secondary schools over the last 23 years. Prior to this I trained as a Chartered Accountant for two years. In my spare time I volunteer for a charitable organisation who run a swimming pool in Tyldesley, performing the role of lifeguard.
Jane Seddon, Co-opted Governor I was appointed to the board of governors in 2016 and my child commenced in Year 7 in September 2016. I sit on the standards committee and the assets committee and I am the appointed governor for safeguarding. I am a member of the chartered institute of personnel and development and I have worked in human resource for over 25 years with extensive experience within the public and private sectors. I am an experienced HR specialist with proven success in policy & strategy development, recruitment & selection, training & development and employment law issues. Equally experienced in strategic development of greenfield sites having opened 3 hotels and 2 hospitals and established businesses with a passionate belief in success through people.
Nicola Winstanley, Associate Governor I am the Finance and Health and Safety Manager at Bedford High School and have been appointed as an Associate Governor from September 2016. Prior to this I have been a School Business Manager for 7 years at 2 different schools. I have completed the Diploma in School Business Management and I am in the process of studying to become a fully qualified Accountant through ACCA.

Rebecca Ramsden, Co-opted Governor
I have worked at Bedford High School since 2005 and have held a number of positions of responsibility. I am currently Director of Learning for Personal Development and a member of the Senior Leadership Team. As part of my role currently, I am responsible for whole school CEIAG, SMSC and student voice and parental engagement.
Lynn Hayes, Co-opted Governor
I am the manager of The Green Grass Community hub in Atherton. I came to Bedford with the Hesketh Fletcher pupils in 2011. I am very proud to be on the governing body. My father, brother, sister, myself, my daughter and granddaughter all attended Bedford High School.
David Liggett, Co-opted Governor
David’s business experience spans several industry sectors. He has managed large teams and departments in finance, engineering, and training and education settings. His experience in business development, and in managing projects and operations has given him an insight into recruitment techniques, IT implementation, effective change management and procurement. He recently qualified in the Management of Volunteers, in Digital Business Management and also holds NEBOSH (Management of Safety and Health) and Accounting qualifications. David is an ex-pupil of Bedford High and has been a governor for 15 years. He is active within the local community, as a member of a Patients Group at a local GP practice, and as a Director of a charity supporting local heritage and community projects.
Cllr Charles Rigby, LA Governor
Councillor Charles Rigby LA Governor, I have been married for forty years and have two daughters. I have served on the governing body since 1997, I have recently retired from Bolton Council where I was employed as a joiner and window surveyor for the past 25 years. I was first elected to the council in May 2000 I have served the wards of Bedford Astley and Leigh South where most of the schools intake reside. As a community Champion I have strong links with the residents and all local schools, I was the chair of governors at Higher Folds County Primary for a number of years and was responsible for the amalgamation of the two primary schools that serve the estate. My hobby fishing helps to fill my spare time.
