What A Result! GCSE Stars Shine at Bedford High School

“I owe it all to Bedford!”

These were the words of joy from top performing student Natasha Bentham as she celebrated a glittering haul of GCSE results today. The 16 year-old outgoing head girl at Bedford High School netted an impressive nine A* and two As – putting her in the top five per cent of students in the country. Natasha’s results included the equivalent of A*s in the new system for measuring English and Maths. “I am overjoyed with the results,” said Natasha. “It has been a lot of hard work but it’s really paid off for me now. I can look towards a really bright future.”

Bright spark Natasha originally made headlines when she sat her GCSE in Biology two year early. Now she is preparing to further her studies at college before going on to University to study either Medicine or Engineering. And she knew who to thank for her stunning set of results. “The teachers at Bedford have been amazing,” she said. “We have received so much support in the run up to the exams. There have been extra revision and study sessions and plenty of one-to-one support as well. The teachers have really kept us motivated and engaged. Bedford has really helped me to get where I am today.”

Natasha wasn’t the only one celebrating because the school showed improvements across the board based on last year’s figures. In terms of the new measurements for Maths and English, Bedford saw 58 per cent of students come away with a four or higher. Bedford High School Headteacher Helen Phillips was full of praise for both students and staff. “The introduction of a new system of measurement can always be a volatile time for any school but I am delighted with the way our young people have risen to the challenge and achieved some excellent grades.”

Mrs Phillips added: “At Bedford we believe that the only way to reach your full potential is to work hard and try your best and this year’s GCSE students have certainly lived up to this ethos.” “I would also like to thank our teaching staff for the support they have given our young people. Everyone at Bedford can be justly proud of these results and we wish everyone well for a great future.”

The school hosted a mini careers fair on results day to help the young people to plan their next steps. There was also plenty of support on hand from staff for the young people “Whatever grades people have achieved today, we are here to help,” said Mrs Phillips. “We support our students for as long as they need our help and we help them make the right decisions about their future.”

Outgoing Head Boy Jake Denton was also celebrating a top set of results, which were the equivalent of all Bs and above. Jake said: “I am really pleased with the results I have received today. I am keeping my options open for the future and thanks to my success today I think I will have plenty of them. Bedford has been a brilliant school and I’ve enjoyed every minute of my time here. I think for a lot of people, what they have learnt at Bedford will stay with them for life.”
