Citizenship

We should not, must not, dare not, be complacent about the health and future of British democracy. Unless we become a nation of engaged citizens, our democracy is not secure.

Lord Chancellor, 1998

This subject teaches students about the world around them and how to make a useful contribution to their society.  Learning is practical and a focus is placed on social enterprise and students running projects within their community.  Citizenship plays a vital role in involving students in their parliament and helping them to voice their opinions.  Citizenship education is not about trying to fit everyone into the same mould, or creating the 'model', or 'good', citizen. It is about enabling citizens to make their own decisions and to take responsibility for their own lives and their communities.

KEY STAGE 3
A selection of schemes of work:
- criminal and civil law;
- government and politics;
- electoral systems;
- concepts such as democracy, justice and the rule of law.

KEY STAGE 4
Year 11 study active citizenship through developing projects to help the vulnerable in their community.  Citizenship education helps our pupils to develop self-confidence and successfully deal with significant life changes and challenges such as bullying and discrimination. Our pupils are encouraged, through Citizenship, to find their voice: in the life of their school, in their communities and in society at large. Pupils are also encouraged to make a positive contribution, by developing the experience needed to claim their rights and understand their responsibilities, and becoming more prepared for the challenges and opportunities of adult and working life.

Through our Citizenship programmes of study we endeavour to produce motivated and responsible learners, who relate positively to each other, to staff and to the surrounding community.
